If your front door suddenly needs a shoulder shove to close, or your deadbolt started fighting you sometime around the Fourth of July, you’re not imagining it. Summer in Northwest Indiana brings heat and lake-driven humidity that can be surprisingly rough on doors, locks, and keys. Here’s what’s happening and what you can do about it.
Why Humidity Makes Doors and Locks Misbehave
Wood absorbs moisture. During a muggy July stretch near Lake Michigan, a wooden door and its frame can swell enough to throw everything slightly out of line. The door still closes, but the latch and deadbolt no longer meet the strike plate where they used to. What feels like a broken lock is often just a swollen door pressing the bolt against metal.
The lock itself usually isn’t damaged at this stage. But if you respond by forcing the key or leaning on the door while you turn the bolt, you can bend the bolt, wear down the key, or eventually snap a key off in the cylinder.
Warning Signs to Catch Early
A few things are worth paying attention to before they become a lockout: a deadbolt you have to jiggle or lift the door handle to throw, a key that needs more wiggling than it did in spring, a latch that scrapes or won’t catch unless you pull the door tight, and hinges that creak or sag. Each of these is a sign the door and frame have shifted, and each gets worse as the humid weeks stack up.
Don’t Forget Your Car in the Heat
Summer affects car access too. Heat is hard on key fob batteries, and a fob that’s been dying slowly all spring often quits in a hot parking lot. Busy summer routines are also prime time for lockouts — keys left in the trunk while loading beach gear at the Indiana Dunes, or a car that auto-locks while it’s running with the AC on. Keeping a spare key somewhere other than inside the car is the cheapest insurance there is.
Simple Maintenance You Can Do This Weekend
A little upkeep goes a long way. Tighten the screws on your hinges and strike plate — sagging hinges cause many alignment problems. Use a dry lubricant such as graphite or a PTFE-based spray in the keyway and on the bolt; avoid heavy oils, which attract dust and gum up the works. And never force a sticking key. If it won’t turn with normal pressure, stop and figure out why.
When It’s Time to Call a Locksmith
If the deadbolt still fights you after tightening and lubricating, the strike plate may need to be repositioned, or the lock itself may be worn out. A locksmith can realign the hardware, adjust or replace the cylinder, and cut fresh keys off the original code rather than copying a worn copy — small fixes now that prevent a broken key or a full lockout later.
