Is Your Child Ready for a First House Key?
There is no magic age — it is about readiness. Can they keep track of belongings for a full school day? Do they know your phone number from memory, and what to do if something feels wrong at the door? A good test: if they can reliably manage a phone, a lunch account, and homework, a key is usually within reach.
Make the Key Easy to Actually Use
Adults forget that stiff locks are hard for small hands. Test your own door: if the key needs a wiggle-and-lift technique you have learned over the years, a child coming home alone will struggle. Have the lock serviced so it turns smoothly, and get the copy cut fresh from the original — a worn copy of a copy is exactly the key that jams or snaps.
Build In a Backup Plan
Keys get lost; assume it will happen. Decide now what your child does when it does: a trusted neighbor who is usually home, a wall-mounted lockbox with a combination they have practiced, or a keypad deadbolt with their own code. A code has a bonus — nothing to lose, and you can see when it was used and know they arrived home.
If the Key Does Go Missing
If a key disappears at school or somewhere along the route, replacing the key is not the fix — anyone could have it, possibly along with something identifying your address. Rekeying the affected locks is quick and restores certainty. Skip name-and-address key tags for exactly this reason.
