Fix the Door Before You Automate It
This is the step people skip and regret. If your current deadbolt requires you to lift or push the door to get it to throw, a motor will struggle with the same misalignment, and it will drain batteries fighting it. A smart lock cannot muscle past a strike plate that does not line up.

Keep a physical key override if you can. Fully keyless looks clean, but a dead battery on a January night is a bad time to discover you have no backup. If you do go keyless, at least know how the emergency power contacts work and keep a spare battery somewhere other than inside the house.
Codes are only as good as your habits. Give guests and contractors their own code rather than sharing yours, and delete codes when they are no longer needed. That is the real advantage over a metal key: you can revoke access without touching the hardware.

The most common do-it-yourself problems are an over-tightened mounting plate that binds the mechanism, a tailpiece left at the wrong length, and a cable pinched between the plate and the door. Any of the three produces a lock that works for a week and then does not.
