A commercial glass door gets used hundreds of times a day, and the hardware on it takes far more abuse than anything on a house. Storefront door lock repair is one of the most common calls we get from small business owners in Northwest Indiana, usually right after the lock starts feeling loose or the key stops turning cleanly.
Why Storefront Hardware Fails
Most aluminum storefront doors use a narrow stile mortise lock with a hook bolt or a deadlatch. Those parts are compact by necessity, and constant traffic wears the cam and the tailpiece long before the cylinder itself gives out. Add a door closer that has drifted out of adjustment and the door starts slamming, which accelerates everything.
Weather plays a role too. Doors in East Chicago and the surrounding industrial corridor deal with road salt, grit, and hard temperature swings, all of which work their way into the mechanism.
Signs You Need Storefront Door Lock Repair
Watch for a key that has to be jiggled or lifted to turn, a bolt that no longer seats fully into the strike, a door that has to be pulled toward you before it will lock, or a thumbturn that spins with no resistance. Any of these means the lock is already failing, and a lock that fails at closing time tends to fail in the unlocked position.
A door that no longer latches on its own is the most urgent one. If staff are propping or pulling it shut, the building is effectively open.
Repair or Replace?
If the door and frame are square and only the lock body is worn, a straight replacement of the mortise lock is usually the right call. If the frame has shifted or the door is sagging on its pivots, swapping the lock alone will not hold, because the new bolt will land in the same wrong spot as the old one.
This is also a good moment to think about keying. Many small businesses are still running the same cylinder they inherited from a previous tenant, with no record of how many keys exist. Rekeying the storefront to a new key, and keeping a written list of who holds one, costs very little and closes a real gap.
Keeping It Working
Adjust the door closer seasonally, keep the threshold clear of grit, and never lubricate a commercial cylinder with a general purpose spray oil, which attracts dust and gums up the pins. A dry graphite or a proper lock lubricant is the right choice.
